Stewardship Tip – Lake Trout

In Flathead Lake, near Kalispell, MT, lake trout have thrived. Lakers, introduced into Flathead in 1905, eliminated another introduced species, the kokanee salmon. Unfortunately, lake trout now threaten native species such as bull trout. According to Montana Trout Unlimited, bull trout spend their formative years in tributaries of the Flathead River before migrating to the lake. When they return, they fall prey to lake trout. By current estimates, there are only 2,500 to 3,500 bull trout in Flathead Lake.

In Lake Tahoe, lake trout foraged on Lahontan cutthroat trout and contributed to their elimination from the lake in 1939. Lahontan trout, native to the Tahoe Basin, were classified as endangered in 1970. The classification was downgraded to threatened in 1975.

In Clear Creek, a tributary of Yellowstone Lake, spawning runs of cutthroat trout often numbered 50,000. The last count was 538. A population of 350,000 lake trout competes with and preys upon the cutts. Lake trout were first discovered in Yellowstone Lake in 1994 and efforts have been in place since that time to reduce the population including gillnetting, deep-netting, and increased soak-time for nets. The National Parks Service has also acquired a Great Lakes-style gillnetting boat making it possible to deploy and process more gillnets.

It will take a large effort to control and reduce the numbers of lake trout where they threaten native species.

But we can contribute. We can help control the population of non-native lake trout by harvesting them from waters where they threaten native fish. In many cases, liberal limits are in place, making lake trout an attractive target. Harvesting a limit of lake trout may only be a small part of the overall goal, but it is a contribution. It is a contribution that can help native populations of fish.

Trout Unlimited is throwing THIS Thursday, Jan. 26th downtown Denver on the 16th Street mall from 12pm-1pm. The “Rally for the Colorado River” seeks to draw river lovers of all kinds – from rafters and kayakers to anglers and guides – to demonstrate front range support for the protecting the Upper Colorado River in the face of big diversion projects like the Windy Gap Firming Project. The feds, including major EPA, will be making an important decision about the fate of the river through their regulatory process and we need all hands on deck.

Boulder Flycasters Annual Meeting
Wednesday November 16, 2011 6:00 PM to 8:30 PM

We’re having our BFC annual meeting on November 16th. We’ve got some business to take care of at this meeting but we’ll also have speakers from national Trout Unlimited and the City of Boulder (and a board member) who are doing interesting projects in Boulder and Colorado. We’ll premium rods, reels and boxes of flies as door prizes at the end of the night.

BUSINESS ITEMS

Vote on New Bylaws: we’ve had to revise our bylaws to conform to new standards required by TU. In the process, we streamlined the current bylaws. State of the Chapter: We’ll review accomplishments from last year, present a financial review of the chapter and discuss key initiatives for fiscal year 2011/2012

PRESENTATIONS

Drew Peternell, Director of TU’s Colorado Water Project (which is part of TU’s Western Water Project) will present an overview of his group’s key conservation initiatives. TU does amazing work here in Colorado that we at the chapter level don’t often hear about. You’ll be impressed by all the work that is going on right under our noses! Don D’Amico, City of Boulder Open Space Ecologist and BFC Secretary will do a short presentation on the lower South Boulder Creek restoration that he led. The city recently completed this project and significantly improved stream habitat and fishing in our own backyard.
