Stewardship Tip – A Timely Reminder

September 29, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Recycled Fish Logouser1949_pic6641_1233608732We never like to see fish kills.  We don’t like to see them occur anywhere; we certainly don’t like to see them in our own backyard.  Whether by commission or omission, someone dumped diesel fuel or paint thinner in a local slough killing fish, minnows, and turtles.

It serves as a timely reminder.

Any household product that is marked with CAUTION, WARNING, DANGER, or POISON should be recycled at a local swap shop or disposed of properly.  Collectively, poisonous materials around the house are referred to as Household Hazardous Waste or HHW.  HHW includes products such as paint thinner, gasoline, oil, and antifreeze.

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Find a place where you can recycle or dispose of your HHW.  Visit Earth911.com, it is an excellent resource for finding recycling centers and centers that will properly dispose of HHW.

Why it is important to the Fish:  HHW is poison.  When it is improperly disposed of in a body of water, HHW can kill large numbers of fish.  It can have an adverse impact on a watershed and can destroy life like a plague as the poison washes downstream.

For some individuals, It might seem convenient to take HHW down to the sewer drain or local waterway for disposal.  It should never be considered convenient and, indeed, should never be considered an option.

Find out where you can recycle or dispose of your HHW at Earth911.com.  Then, spread the word!  Let your friends and neighbors know where they can recycle or dispose of their HHW!

Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO) and Colorado State Parks celebrated their anniversaries on National Fishing & Hunting Day at St.Vrain State Park East of Longmont this past Saturday. Formerly known as Barbour Ponds, St.Vrain Park is becoming a natural resource oasis for the quickly developing Front Range. GOCO funds helped State Parks add 490 acres to the park and it is now adding and upgrading facilities including modern camping facilities, trail additions and fishing piers.

IMG00010-20090926-0923  23658Web  25314WebThe park provides a warm water fishery within 20 miles of downtown Denver.  GOCO was celebrating its 15th anniversary helping preserve, protect, enhance, and manage the state’s wildlife, park, river, trail, and open space heritage. Throughout 2009, Colorado State Parks is celebrating its 50th anniversary as a leader in providing opportunities for outdoor recreation, protecting the state’s favorite landscapes, teaching generations about nature and partnering with communities.

As part of National Hunting & Fishing Day, the Colorado Division of Wildlife and BFC volunteers offered three fishing clinics to children who learned all the basics of fishing and received a free fishing rod to take home!    IMG00014-20090926-1032There were over one hundred kids and adults who participated in the clinics and fishing.   Other activities such as hay rides, wildlife clinics and a visit from Talon, the Colorado State Parks Boat Safety Mascot were all part of the celebration festivities.

If you’d like to volunteer to participate in other youth programs such as this with BFC in the future, please contact Larry Quilling  for more information.

South Boulder Creek Fish Sampling Study: Volunteers needed

SBC Fish Sampling Collected 9-14-09

Volunteers & DOW Sampling SBC 9-14-09

Don’t miss out on the opportunity to help sample fish populations in South Boulder Creek Friday, October 2nd with the Colorado Division of Wildlife.  This sampling day will be the continuation of the studies conducted last fall and two weeks ago at McGinn Ditch.  This year’s sample is important as we will evaluate Rod’s habitat project collecting “after” construction data and also look for the 11,000 clipped (adipose fin) hofer Rainbow Trout planted in SBC by Ben and volunteers this past June.  We’ll also plan to sample a 2nd site near the Scherer ditch; this represents more “before” McGinn Ditch reconstruction data and Hofer evaluation.

All parties interested in participating in the South Boulder Creek Sampling will meet  Friday Oct. 2 (10 a.m.) in Eldorado State Park west of Eldorado Springs.  Flows out of Gross should be less than 22 CFS (16 CFS at present).  Sampling should be done by 3pm; bring a lunch for eating between sites.  As always, we are not putting our waders on for the fun of it….answers lie in the river.  For those of you who have not participated in sampling before, waders are required to insulate you from the electric current applied to the stream.  This is an open invitation to BFC participation, Ben Swigle will have his full crew on site and our help is wanted.

Volunteers must fill out this form prior to assisting:

Don’t miss out on a very important but very fun day on South Boulder Creek.   September 14th  we sampled many of the clipped Hofers already so it appears this project is working in SBC.  Please contact me if you are interested in participating or if you have any questions.
