Please join ME on a trip to the Nebraska Sand Hills for a private water pike fly-fishing adventure.   The cost is very reasonable at $75 per person each day for lodging accommodations and access to Spring Meadows Ranch located 5 hours from Denver or 2 hours 20 minutes northeast of Cabelas in Sidney NB.

Some 20 years or so ago Mike was active member of CTU/BFC.  He currently resides in Richmond, Virginia, where he continues to pursue his passion for angling, art and his dedication to the preservation of game fish.  Among Simon’s book illustrations are Trout Bum, by John Gierach and Freshwater Wilderness, by John D. Varley and Paul Shullery.  He has also been commissioned to create limited edition posters, murals and lithographs for Trout Unlimited, The Federation of Flyfishers and the American Museum of Fly Fishing

Here is a YouTube video of an odd little fish with very unusual mechanisms for seeing.  I feel certain that I have finally found a species of fish that Paul Prentiss has not caught on a fly rod!  Click here to see the video.

Wanted: 20 Happy Campers

June 7-12

Peace Ranch, Basalt CO

2008-ctu-camp

The Colorado Trout Unlimited River Conservation and Fly Fishing Youth Camp is a week long experience that introduces students aged 14-18 to the principles of science-based conservation and the fine arts of fly fishing and fly tying.

Participants learn from experts in various fields of environmental science, representing organizations such as the U.S. Forest Service, Colorado Division of Wildlife, the Environmental Protection Agency and Colorado State University.

Activities include participating in a habitat restoration project, snorkeling to observe fish behavior, water quality sampling, tours of a hydro-electric facility and a fish hatchery, and of course, plenty of fishing.

Academic sessions include stream ecology, entomology, hydrology and human impacts on Rocky Mountain ecosystems.

Cost for the 6-day camp is $450, but financial aid is often available from TU chapters. To find your local chapter, visit www.cotrout.org or phone Colorado Trout Unlimited at 303-440-2937.

Applicants must be 14-18 years of age and must submit an application as well as a brief essay on why the student would like to attend the camp.

Successful candidates will be selected by CTU staff and chapter leaders based on the student’s commitment to learning about conservation. Applications must be received by March 30, 2009, and may be emailed to mcnich5@comcast.net, or mailed to Mike Nicholson, Camp Director, S. Fenton St., Denver CO 80227. For more information contact Mike Nicholson at mcnich5@comcast.net (303 – 987-8425) or David Nickum at dnickum@tu.org (303-440-2937 ext. 101).

I posted in January the unfortunate tale of an accident my friend Tom had with his truck & boat on Wilson Pass in Oregon. It is a drive I have made with Tom countless times and it really highlighted the dangers of winter steelhead fishing.

As an update to the story, Tom had a great incentive to get the boat repaired and ready to drop in the water again this season. Rains have been infrequent in Oregon this winter so the steelhead are still stacked up out in the Pacific waitng to make their runs. Tom has expeidted the repairs on his boat and is ready for the late season. Here are some pictures of his repairs and the motivation as to why we steelhead fish.
