Trout Unlimited Revives Vail Valley chapter

December 2, 2009 · Leave a Comment

The Vail Valley had one of the first Trout Unlimited chapters in the U.S. Now, after a dozen years of being part of a regional group, the local chapter is back in action, and has already hosted several events, and a general meeting is planned for January.

That’s one reason the Eagle Valley has its own Trout Unlimited chapter again.

Trout Unlimited, an organization dedicated to preserving and protecting coldwater fisheries around the county, has had a presence in Eagle County almost since its founding 50 years ago. In fact, the local chapter was among the first 10 created in the country.

But a little more than a decade ago, the chapters for the Eagle Valley, Roaring Fork Valley and Garfield County merged, in order to combine fundraising and lobbying efforts.

It was that group Alex Schaefer, a local financial adviser, joined a few years ago. But as he became more involved with the group, it became more apparent to Schaefer and others that the Eagle Valley might need a chapter to call its own again…..read the article

Public Meeting Action Alert!! South Boulder Creek In-stream Flows

November 29, 2009 · 1 Comment

Do you want to see winter flows in South Boulder Creek?   Want to eliminate the fall fish kills when flows go to zero at the end of the irrigation season?    Then you need to participate in the public hearings Denver Water has scheduled for public comment regarding the enlargement of Gross Reservoir. Normally, we would not be supporting the creation or enlargement of dam works but this project is an exception.  Denver’s enlargement of Gross Reservoir is for storage of existing Denver water rights.  As mitigation of the flooding of public lands, Denver has agreed to provide a 5,000 acre ft. environmental which will be used to create minimum winter flows on South Boulder Creek.   The cities of Boulder and Lafayette are drafting an operational agreement which will provide 7cfs from Gross to South Boulder Rd. through the winter months.   The agreement will also provide a minimum of 3fcs all the way to the Middle Boulder Creek confluence.  This section of the creek has been dewatered for over fifty years.   Detailed below is the Denver Water press release.  Please come out and show your support and create a lasting legacy of instream flows for South Boulder Creek.

Please plan to attend the meeting in person Tuesday evening or send comments to the blog we can print and present at the meeting.

Larry Quilling

BFC President

Denver Water is in the process of obtaining the necessary permits to enlarge Gross Reservoir (Moffat Project). One of the mitigation measures proposed by Denver Water is an enlargement of Gross Reservoir by an additional 5,000 acre-feet for an environmental pool in Gross Reservoir. In July of 2009, Trout Unlimited sent a letter to the Board of Commissioners of Denver Water showing support for the creation of an environmental pool as reasonable and appropriate means for mitigating impacts to South Boulder Creek.

There will be a public meeting on Tuesday December 1, 2009 in Boulder to gather comments on the Draft EIS released on October 30, 2009 by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for the Moffat Project. Denver Water is asking Trout Unlimited provide oral comment at the Public Hearing to show support for the creation of the environmental pool.  Denver Water realizes that Trout Unlimited may have other concerns with other impacts caused by the proposed Moffat Project, but we are hopeful that support can be shown by Trout Unlimited for the creation of an environmental pool as mitigation for impacts to South Boulder Creek.

Public Hearing 6 pm

COMMENTARY…..

To get this additional 5000, acre feet the proposed expansion will be 2.7 times the current capacity of 41,800 – solved by adding 125 feet to the height of the current dam.  So where will this water come from?  Through the Moffat Tunnel from the already pressured Western Slope.  The increasing demand on these resources continue to have a negative impact on the ecology of the Colorado River and it tributaries like the Fraiser.  The question is how can we improve the situation on South Boulder Creek without shooting ourselves in the foot….Paul Prentiss

Where: Boulder Country Club, 7350 Clubhouse Road

When: An open house will held from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, followed by the public hearing

Stewardship Tip – Recycling Packing Material

November 29, 2009 · Leave a Comment

For a number of years now, we have been saving packing materials.  We recently shipped a number of fragile items.  Rather than purchasing new packing material, we reused some foam “peanuts” that we had received several years ago.  We put a note in the package encouraging the recipients to save the material and and reuse it in their next shipment.

We saved some money; if you’ve purchased any foam packing material recently, you know that it isn’t cheap.  And we were reusing – not even recycling.  There was no net energy loss.  In addition, there was no waste or toxicity associated with production of more packaging.  Did we mentioned that we saved money and time?

Whenever we receive foam packing material in a shipment, we put in in a bag.  We used to store it in a closet, but it has now graduated to the garage.  It’s always right there; rather than a trip to the store to purchase material, we walk to the garage.  Another net savings in energy.  In the event we need a little more filler, we use shredded paper from our paper shredder.

If you receive foam packing material, put it in a bag and save it.  Use it next time you need to ship something.  Encourage your recipients to do the same.

Why it is important to the fish:  Reuse keeps trash out of landfills.  It keeps trash out of our streams, rivers, and lakes.  It reduces the emissions from manufacturing new products.  When we reuse, we all benefit.  Our fish benefit as well.

November Night Fishing

November 22, 2009 · 5 Comments

The night can be a perfect time to ambush trout that are used to lots of day time pressure.  It’s also a great time to intercept big, cannibalistic trout on their pitch black prowl.   Large streamers on 1x are a great starting point, but this evening the fish wanted their midnight snacks to be dead drifted bugs.  Glow in the dark thingamabobbers made the presentation and detection possible.

Night Fishing Necessities:

-Headlamp

-Very warm clothes (more on this to come)

-Keen knowledge of the water to be fished (do some recon on where the fish hang out and what the under water topography looks like during the day time)

- Controlled insanity
